When you spend your summer days outside in the sun and heat, the last thing you want to do is come home to a hot and uncomfortable interior. Obviously, there are a million things you can do to help keep your home cool, but some solutions are very expensive. For example, constantly running your air conditioner can be wasteful, especially when you aren't in the home. But, if you are gone for so long that your home starts to heat up, it will take much longer for your air conditioner to cool it back to a comfortable temperature.
It is definitely helpful if you close your shades or blinds when you are away from your home. However, many people like to let light into their home, especially during the summer. So, if you want to let light into your home you don't want to make your home too dark, but you don't want the sun heating up your room. To find the middle ground, you should consider solar blinds. This article explains exactly what solar blinds are, and how they can be very helpful when it comes to keeping your home cool and reducing energy consumption.
What are Solar Blinds?
Solar blinds are essentially fabric blinds that are see through. When the sun is shining outside of your home, you will still be able to see out. But, when you look through the fixture from the outside, the blind provides privacy. Basically, you can see out of your window, but you can't see in. It is worth noting that at night, when the lights inside your home are on, you will be able to see into the window, but not out.
The best thing about solar blinds is that they block UV rays and greatly reduce heat transfer into your home. Blinds will have a percentage rating based on their "openness." The higher the percentage, the more open the blind is, and the more light that is let through the shades. You might have to compromise because you don't want a product that is so closed and dark that it doesn't let any lights in. At the same time, you don't want to get something that is too light because it won't offer that much UV protection.
It is better to have something that is a little darker because you can always just open it up to let more light in. Solar blinds are one of the cheapest and most effective ways to make a room more energy efficient, especially for windows that are under a lot of direct sunlight.
