4 One-Of-A-Kind Ideas For Transforming Your Bay Window In The Kitchen

Posted on: 23 May 2015

If you've decided that it is time to renovate your home with new windows or are building a brand new home, you may want to consider having a bay window installed in your kitchen. Some may avoid bay windows because of the "wasted" space in front of the window. However, this space does not need to go to waste. There are several things that you can do to make this space unique and very useful. Here are four:

1. Office Space

A kitchen bay window is the perfect location for a custom-built office desk. By being in the vicinity of the kitchen, you will be able to work while you watch dinner without having to worry about burning dinner or missing a deadline. Don't forget to add a couple of open shelves or drawers for storage.

2. Cookbook Library

If you collect cookbooks or have a collection of cookbooks that have been handed down in your family, you may want to consider using this space in front of the bay window to create your very own library of cookbooks. It's a great way to keep them close, yet out of your way in the kitchen. It opens up more room in the kitchen for storage of pots, pans, utensils, etc.

3. Herb Garden

Another idea is to turn this space into an herb garden. A bay window allows plenty of natural light, which your garden would need, but you won't have to worry about the herbs getting too much heat from direct sunlight outside. With an herb garden right in your kitchen, you won't ever have to go outside to pick the herbs that you need for the meal that you are cooking.

4. Corner Café

If you would like to use the space for a place to eat without having to have a full-fledged dining room table, you could turn the area into a little corner café. To be unique, this idea omits the built-in bench that many bay windows have. Instead, you will have a small round table with a couple of individual chairs – like you would see in a downtown corner café. It's a great place to sit down for your morning coffee or to relax with a book in the evening.

Depending on how much room you have, you may be able to incorporate a couple of these ideas at the same time, such as the corner café and cookbook library. If you need help with window installation, contact a company like Welty Custom Exteriors, Inc.

Explaining Your Vision to Your Contractor

A few years ago, my wife and I decided that it would be fun to remodel our kitchen. After checking out a myriad of websites and carefully developing a plan of attack, we hired a contractor and started looking at counter samples. Unfortunately, we weren't able to adequately show our vision to our contractor, and we didn't end up with the kitchen that we wanted. I want to help other homeowners to know what they need to say and do in order to get what they want out of the construction process. Read through these articles to find out more.
